Figuring Out Adobe Illustrator Live Trace & Pixel Art

Capy loves pixels. Heck, our next game - Super TIME Force - is entirely done in pixel art. When we’re asked for screenshots or need to create your everyday promotional art, its quite easy just to hop into Photoshop, set your scaling interpolation to NEAREST NEIGHBOR and scale up the image in 100% intervals.

But every so often we get into situations where simply 2x/3x/4x/etc increases don’t work. I’ve been toying with Illustrators Live Trace functionality for a while, but never dove deep enough to get it to work with pixels… until now! Here’s how we got it to work…

STEP 1: We import the piece into Photoshop at its native res, and using Nearest Neighbor increase the scale by a huge amount (say 1000%-2000%). We save that out as a PNG and import the larger image into Illustrator.

STEP 2: Time for Live Trace. Start it up and use the following settings in your options…

The key things to note are that Corner Angle is set to 180 (that will give you the hard edges you need) and Path Fitting is set to 0 (that will tell Live Trace to exactly follow the lines in the original).

STEP 3: Rejoice! And maybe remove background whites, because checking ‘ignore whites’ will also remove whites inside your image (not just the whites showing through transparencies).

There’s some limits here, like 256 colors, but since we’re talking about pixel art that shouldn’t be much of an issue. The other limit is that its not 100% perfect edging. There’s normally ~1px of anti-aliasing around each “vector square” (ie. pixel), but we feel that’s acceptable.

So, there you have it. Live Trace + Pixels = infinitely scalable pixels. Yaytime!
